Dr. Van Allen-Haase received her certificate in Straightwire Orthodontics in 2010 and is a member of the International Association for Orthodontics. She practices under the philosophy of functional treatment, using a combination of appliances and fixed therapy. The purpose of functional appliances or orthopedics is to develop the upper and lower dental arches/jaws to allow room for all of the teeth, to help eliminate airway problems and to help improve the health of the temporal mandibular joint (TMJ). Functional appliances are best used at an early age when children are still growing. Fixed therapy or conventional “train-track” braces are then used to align the teeth.
